3 Popular & Unconventional Eco-Friendly Flooring Solutions

Posted on September 17th, 2013 by

In the past, eco-friendly flooring suggested bland, boring and dull materials. Fortunately, this is no longer the case. The demand for eco-friendly flooring products from environmentally savvy clients has forced manufacturers to create products that are not only sustainable, but beautiful.

As a top flooring store in San Diego, we stay up to date with the newest flooring products and trends and offer 3 of the most popular, up-and coming, and unconventional flooring options being utilized by designers, builders and homeowners:

  1. Cork – When we first suggest cork flooring to customers, their first thought tends to be related to their favorite bottle of wine. However, cork is gaining popularity as a flooring product for its sustainability and durability (cork can last up to 30 years). Because cork is harvested from the bark of the cork oak tree, the actual tree does not have to be cut down. The bark will grow back in about three years, making cork an extremely renewable resource. Cork is also fire retardant, easy to maintain and acts as a natural insect repellent. Not sure it will match your design? Cork, like other San Diego hardwood flooring materials, can be stained to match any color scheme or design.

  2. Concrete – Although the concrete flooring look is not for everyone, it s a sustainable material that offers a unique design aesthetic to any room. San Diego homeowners who are looking for a more modern and bold design often gravitate toward concrete floors. And getting concrete floors is simple! Concrete is typically used as subflooring for certain residential homes. Homeowners can simply remove the top flooring layer and polish it and tint it to a color that matches their style. Not surprisingly, concrete is extremely durable, is easy to clean and never has to be replaced.

  3. Rubber – While tile flooring in San Diego is still the most commonly used material in bathrooms, rubber flooring is giving it a run for its money. More and more, designers are starting to use rubber flooring in bathrooms, as well as kitchens and sunrooms. Made from recycled tires, this type of flooring provides cushion under your feet and is water resistant, making it great for areas of the home exposed to high moisture. Don’t worry, the rubber flooring for residential properties isn’t the same as the kind you’d see at the gym. In fact, rubber flooring now comes in a variety of different styles and colors.
