Safe Ways to Freshen Your Carpet

Posted on September 11th, 2015 by

Even if your home is immaculate, your carpet still continues to accumulate dust, dirt, and other particulates, which cause unpleasant odors to manifest. Unfortunately, once you notice a smell in your carpet, it’s not enough to simply vacuum. The experts at Unique Flooring in San Diego can recommend additional measures to restore your carpet to its former glory.

Baking Soda to the Rescue

Start by vacuuming up the dirt, and then sprinkle a layer of baking soda on the carpet. To make sure that it gets deep into the fibers, use a broom to brush over the carpeting. Next, add an additional layer of baking soda to the floor. Allow it sit overnight, then use a broom and dustpan to sweep the top layer off and run your vacuum over the carpet to remove the rest. You should notice an improvement, but if not, you can repeat this process as many times as it takes to make your carpet fresh again.

Vinegar – The God of Cleaning Solutions

If baking soda can’t remove odors from your carpet, then chances are, vinegar will. Add white distilled vinegar to a clean spray bottle and spray it onto the surface of your carpet. Be sure the area is well ventilated and have fans on hand to help the carpet dry (you can make dry time faster by blotting the vinegar onto the carpet with a washcloth instead). Let the vinegar solution set for twenty minutes and then use a clean cloth to soak it up. You may then spray the carpet with clean water and allow it to dry.

Vodka Is Not Just for Drinking

You can use vodka to spot clean pet odors or food/beverage stains, or you can spray it on the entire carpet. Let it soak into the carpet for ten to fifteen minutes, use an old towel to absorb the vodka, and then sprinkle a light layer of baking soda on the damp areas. Follow that up with a quick vacuuming and your carpet is as good as new.

Consider Using Essential Oils

Simply add 2 to 3 drops of essential oil to a cotton ball and place it into your vacuum bag or canister before vacuuming. As you vacuum, the fresh scent of the oils will permeate the air and your carpet, uplifting you with its all-natural scents.

There are many ways to freshen your carpet without using harmful chemicals or replacing your floor altogether.
