Pros and Cons of an Open Floor Plan

Posted on June 10th, 2016 by

If you’ve been thinking about buying a home with an open floor plan or switching out the layout of your current home, there are a few things to consider beforehand. Though there are many things to love about this look, some homeowners may realize they prefer a more traditional layout after weighing out the options. The staff at Unique Flooring in San Diego discusses a few pros and cons of open floor plans.

Plenty of Space

An open floor plan can make a small home look big and a large home seem huge. By dividing a home up into multiple smaller rooms, you may inadvertently create a claustrophobic maze that seems smaller than it actually is. However, when you free the house up with an open floor plan, you can create a much larger, open feeling without impacting the use of each room’s individual space.

Less Privacy

With an open floor plan, there are fewer nooks for family members and guests to spend time alone. For some, this can create constant social pressure and offer little in the way of personal space and private time.

Easier to Spend Time Together

It’s not always easy for a large gathering of family or friends to cram into one room together. With an open floor plan, you can have all your houseguests in the same general space without it feeling too crowded. It even allows the people cooking in the kitchen to be part of the fun instead of being relegated to a small room by themselves.

Hard to Define Spaces

It’s important to have a good sense of space and an eye for design when creating an open floor plan because it can be challenging to come up with a way to define the space of each individual room without impacting the overall flow. It is possible to create intimate, cozy seating areas and well-defined rooms in an open floor plan, but it can be harder to do so than it is in a traditional floor plan.

One of the most essential features of both traditional and open floor plans is the flooring.
