Mohawk Wins Award for Sustainable Practices

As a leading installer of Mohawk carpet in San Diego, Unique Flooring is proud to share the following.

The Coosa River Basin Initiative (CRBI) recently announced that it has chosen Mohawk Industries for the Greenie Award. The award is meant to celebrate Mohawk’s long-term efforts to promote sustainability and reduce the company’s environmental footprint.

The business model of Mohawk Group is founded on principles of sustainability. They produce 395 products that are certified as eco-friendly with environmental product declarations (EPD), health product declarations (HPD) and Declare labels. One product, EverStrand carpet fiber, repurposes five billion plastic bottles each year, and at least 24 million pounds of old tires are saved from the landfill to produce their welcome mats.

Mohawk has taken further steps toward environmental responsibility by continuously improving practices. Since 2010, production facilities have managed to reduce overall water use by 300 million gallons. Due to the Zero Process to Landfill Program, 27 facilities recycle or reuse 100% of their process waste, not sending any to landfills.

David Tucker, CRBI’s executive director says, “Mohawk employees are leading the way toward not just a more efficient, profitable business, but also toward cleaner, healthier communities.” Jenny Cross, Mohawk’s vice president of corporate sustainability responded to the award, “As a global company, we have proven that we can make a positive impact with our manufacturing processes and our products. We have demonstrated that we can create beautiful flooring while decreasing our environmental footprint and enriching our communities. This award is a testament to the more than 8,000 employees in the region who dedicate themselves each day to making a difference.”
