Waterproof flooring in a Carlsbad, CA home

What is waterproof flooring?

Waterproof flooring is entirely impervious to liquid.  Excess water cannot soak through to the core, either when it’s spilled on or submerged; wipe it off, and the floor will look good as new.  Since it is constructed of 100% waterproof materials, the capability is inherent without special coatings or backings.

Some people use the phrases water-resistant and waterproof interchangeably, but that’s not entirely accurate. While something can be highly water-resistant, even to the point of being considered almost impervious, there’s always a chance liquid can penetrate.

WPC and SPC flooring

Up until recently, the only choices for waterproof flooring were tile or luxury vinyl (LVF). These floors are a newer, more advanced version of luxury vinyl with thicker, more durable vinyl and a technologically advanced core, either the WPC (wood plastic composite) or SPC (stone plastic composite).

These cores, which give the highest moisture protection level, won’t peel or ripple no matter how much water the floor's exposed to or for how long.  While both offer the same level of water protection, the difference is in the feeling underfoot.  WPC, sometimes called WPC flooring, is warmer and more resilient.  SPC flooring, sometimes called Rigid Core, is firmer, more rigid like a hard surface, and durable enough to be used in commercial applications.

Style in waterproof flooring

Like all LVF, these floors have images inspired with true-to-life echoes of wood, stone or tile, and available in a wide assortment of colors and patterns.  Micro beveling and deep embossing give depth and dimension, especially with the wood grains or veining variations and textured appearances.

It can be cut into long planks to mimic hardwood, called vinyl plank flooring or square, groutable pieces to echo stone or tile, called LVT Flooring. Many feel the extra seams add even more to the realism.

Low maintenance, the floors need only regular sweeping and mopping.  Installation can be a floating floor where the pieces click together, mat, then hover over the subfloor with no nails or glue.
