Effective Ways to Remove a Tough Stain on Your Carpet

Posted on January 8th, 2016 by

Though thecarpet flooring San Diego homeowners purchase is typically of a high quality, no carpet is impervious to stains. However, most stains can be easily removed with some simple mixtures and the right approach. Here are a few examples of common carpet stains and the solutionsthat may successfully remove them.

Pet Stains

Begin treatment by blotting up the waste, and then pour enough white vinegar to cover the stain entirely. Next, sprinkle baking soda over the vinegar and let it sit for 5-10 minutes so the solution absorbs the stain. After the stain is absorbed, blot it away with a damp rag, let it dry, and then vacuum the area.

Organic Stains

For stains caused by food, dirt, and other organic matter, first create a mixture with one part vinegar to two parts water and shake it in a spray bottle. Next, saturate the stain with the mixture and cover it with a damp rag, then set your iron to high steam and hold it over the rag for 30 seconds. If the stain persists, you can repeat the process until it is gone.

Beverage Stains

For fresh wine or fruit juice spills, it’s best to blot, not rub, the stain immediately to absorb most of the liquid. After blotting, sprinkle table salt over the stain and let it dry overnight. After the area is dry, vacuum up the salt and the stain should be gone. If the stain is still there, rewet it with club soda and repeat the process as needed.

Blood or Vomit Stains

The key to removing these stains is cleaning them immediately. Blot the stain to absorb all of the liquid. Next, you will need to make a mix of cold water, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide, which should be in equal parts. Before treating the stain, make sure to test an area for color fastness, then liberally spray the area with the mixture and blot it with a damp rag. Repeat until the stain is gone.
