5 Reasons to Choose Tile for a Pet-Friendly Home

Posted on July 31st, 2015 by

For families who have cats or dogs, finding a type of flooring that works for your furry friends can be tough. As certain types of flooring are more susceptible to damage from pets, it’s particularly important to find a floor that will hold up to animal paws, claws, and fur. At Unique Flooring San Diego, our flooring and design experts suggest that tile flooring is the best option for pet-friendly homes.

1. Scratch Resistant
The nails of cats and dogs can scratch certain types of flooring, including laminate and wood, when running or walking across it. When nails are left untrimmed, the harder surface of tile won’t scratch easily. Plus, if an occasional scratch does occur, the gradient on tile is better at covering the mark than other types of floor.

2. Low in Allergens
If family members have pet allergies, you can diminish some of their effect by choosing a tile floor. Unlike carpets that hold onto pet dander and fur that is shed during the summer months, tile flooring is easy to sweep and mop clean of fur and dander, helping keep the floor and home allergen-free.

3. Easy Maintenance
Even the best house-trained dog or litter box-trained cat has the occasional accident. While carpet and wood floors may absorb liquids or smells and can stain, you can easily wipe down tile with water and a mild cleaner. This way, you can ensure that you get rid of the smell of the urine or feces left by the pet and leave the floor clean and stain-free.

4. Cool Touch
In warmer climates, the hot summer weather can be miserable for pets. However, tile flooring, which draws heat away from objects and doesn’t retain warmth, can help pets stay cool. Since tile will stay cool to the touch even during summer heat, when dogs and cats walk or lay on it, the tile can help reduce their body temperatures.

5. Slip Reduction
Wooden flooring can make it difficult for pets to walk or run on, leading to slips and falls. Textured tile can give pets a way to maintain their grip on the floor, helping them maintain their balance as they walk and run through the home.
