Carpet in bedroom

How do I shop for a new carpet installation in San Diego?

Carpet is one of the most popular flooring choices and the good news is that it comes in so many colors, styles, patterns, and designs there’s an installation to fit into every budget, whether it’s in San Diego or elsewhere.

The bad news is that all those choices can be overwhelming so at Unique Floors, we’ll simplify it for you.

  1. Explore both your lifestyle and the room in your San Diego home where you’re planning the installation.  One of the biggest mistakes is that people buy the wrong carpet for them.  The room is important because not all carpet is the same.

Is your home high or low traffic?  Do you have kids and/or pets? What is your budget?  What is your home’s overall style?  What may be great for one room may be terrible for another.  Will you install the carpet in the bedroom, living room, or some other room?  Or are you using it in an area, such as the entrance foyer (which is high traffic and requires stain-resistance) or the stairs (which have both safety and durability issues)?

Be sure to discuss this in detail with your San Diego flooring expert so you get the right carpet for your installation.

  1. Know about density, because that, not thickness, is what determines quality. You’d be surprised at how many people come into our showroom in stating that a thicker carpet is better.

Density is how closely the fibers are tufted together.  Bend the sample card and if you see a lot of white space, you know it’s of lower quality.

  1. Do you want a high pile or low pile?  High piles are the plush rugs like the Frieze ( with its twisted fibers)  or the Shag, which now comes in a wide assortment of colors from purple to red to black.

Low piles are the loop constructions, like the Berber, or cut-and-loop.

  1. Take measurements before you shop for the carpet. Of course, you’ll need professional measuring when the time comes for your installation, so it can take into account baseboards, moldings, and closets.

Even if you only have a general idea, it will give you a better idea of what you can afford.

  1. Don’t skimp on the padding; buy the best quality recommended.  You can’t see it, but it’s like driveway asphalt; it sets the foundation and protects the carpet.
