Take a good look at the age and style of your home when choosing a baseboard profile and finish. Many people also choose to match the colors of their new baseboards with those in other areas of the house, and paint stores can usually match an existing color of paint or stain.
Source and Budget
Baseboard prices can vary considerably, but big-box hardware stores carry many affordable types. If there is room in your budget, add cap and shoe moulding. If you are matching trim in an older or higher-end home, you may need to visit a lumber mill or have the moulding custom made.
Tools
Consider procuring some inexpensive but specialized tools. A digital angle finder will help you determine the correct angles for your trim, and a miter saw will help you cut those angles with ease. You will also want a tape measure, level, hammer and nails or a nail gun, caulk and caulk gun, and finishing supplies.
Knowledge
If you are new to baseboard installation, buy or borrow a how-to book, watch an instructional video on YouTube, or get an experienced friend or family member to help. Also, remember these tips:
- Buy extra trim to allow for joints and mistakes. Nobody likes running back to the store in the middle of a project.
- Floors and walls are rarely perfect. Your walls probably do not form 90-degree angles, so be prepared to adjust your cuts. The walls might also be bumpy or damaged near the floor. Use wood shims or caulk to maintain a smooth profile.
- Like moulding, tools come in a range of styles and prices. If you plan to install other trim in the future, consider purchasing nicer hand tools or a power miter saw. An additional investment now could make this and any future baseboard projects much easier.
