Laminate flooring in an Oceanside, CA home

Can you choose laminate for a waterproof floor?

Not all products, but yes, there is laminate you can choose that’s waterproof flooring. While most of us are familiar with the original laminate that's water-resistant, technology has created a newer version that keeps the product from absorbing liquids.

What is waterproof laminate flooring?

This special backing prevents liquid from seeping through the product, and it works differently from waterproof vinyl flooring. Laminate is waterproof from the top, meaning you can pour liquids over it, and it won’t absorb. Vinyl is waterproof from the bottom, which means you can submerge it, and it will come out looking untouched.

What is laminate flooring?

Laminate is a layered product that’s fused. It is made of wood chips, and, because of that, it can be vulnerable to excess water and moisture. That means the waterproof version is a significant advance. The layers are as follows: Underlayment (often pre-attached but, if not, you'll need to purchase one), core (HDF, high-density fiberboard is the best), the image layer, and top clear aluminum-oxide wear sheet that protects the floor from scratches and scuffs.

The image layer offers stylish savings

This deserves a special and separate mention because it is so stylish we see it in every room in the house. It’s a realistic resemblance to wood, stone, or tile, and it comes in a wide range of colors and patterns. The image is taken with 3D photography and a digital printer, so it’s vibrant and accurate. It is deeply embossed, giving it depth, dimension, and textured appearances such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, or distressed. Finishes are available in matte, gloss, or high gloss colors. It can also be cut into planks or square tile-sized pieces.

Either version is easy to clean, requiring only a regular sweeping and periodic mopping with a damp mop and manufacturer-approved cleaner. Installation is the floating floor technique where the pieces click together like a puzzle to a mat, then hover over the subfloor.
