LVT flooring in a Carlsbad, CA kitchen

How long will luxury vinyl tile flooring last?

LVT flooring can last up to 20 years and beyond, depending on product quality, correct installation, and proper maintenance.  Like anything, the better you take care of it, the longer it lasts. LVT is luxury vinyl flooring (LVF), cut into square, groutable tile-sized pieces, but it can also be cut into planks (LVP) to mimic hardwood boards.

With true-to-life images of wood, stone, and tile and an almost unlimited number of colors and patterns, this is one of the most popular choices among homeowners.  The designs are micro-beveled, embossed, and have textured appearances, such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, or distressed.

Know the difference in materials

A luxury vinyl tile (or LVT) is thicker than standard sheet vinyl.  It's also 100% waterproof with a top, clear, strong wear layer that protects the floor.  All vinyl is durable, but thicker means extra hardwearing with better design capabilities. You will want a thickness of at least 8-mm or higher. Keep in mind there are also two kinds of vinyl tiles; luxury and composite, so be very specific to your flooring expert about what you want.

Make sure you use the right floor cleaner

There's a good reason we tell our customers to use manufacturer-approved cleaners and avoid wax and shine promoting ones. Those cleaners damage the urethane finish and dull the floor.  What is the best cleaner to use?  One cup of apple cider vinegar to one gallon of water. (Make sure you sweep well before mopping, as you don't want to spread around any dirt.) If your floor is especially soiled, you can put a drop of dish detergent in the solution.  However, if you do that, you'll need to go over the floor again, but this time with only the vinegar-water blend.

Correct installation is vital to the appearance, performance, and longevity of your LVT flooring. This can be an uncomplicated floating floor technique, which clicks, mat, and hover. Subfloors must be level because imperfections can appear on the surface floor.  For more information, come to Unique Flooring.  Our showroom is in Oceanside, CA, and we service Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista.
